Combined Heat and Power Fuel Cell for University of California, Irvine Medical Center

Installation has begun on a 1.4 megawatt (MW) fuel cell power plant that will provide both electricity and useable high quality heat for the UCI Medical Center. Fuel Cell Energy Inc. a global leader in the design, manufacture, operation, and service of ultra clean, quiet, and efficient fuel cell power plants will install, operate, and service the unit.

"Stationary fuel cell power plants are a solution whose time has come for addressing the myriad of power generation challenges facing our society," said Professor Scott Samuelsen, Director the National Fuel Cell Research Center at UCI. Because fuel cells generate power without combustion, its exhaust is virtually pollution-free, and since the power plant is configured for combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP), the same unit of fuel also generates high quality heat that will be used both for heating water, and converting a portion of the heat into cooling for air conditioning via a direct exhaust absorption chiller.
