The UCI Hydrogen Station Expansion is Complete

As the number of automakers retailing Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV's) to the general public increases, the UC Irvine Hydrogen Fueling Station operated by the National Fuel Cell Research Center (NFCRC), has been expanded to increase the dispensing capacity from 50 kg per day to 180 kg per day. Additional features that were updated to support the growing fuel cell vehicle population include the fuel delivery and compressor systems, a larger cooling block for faster 700 bar fills, and a new dispenser equipped for point of sale transactions.

While the station will serve the growing community of FCEV's and continue in its research role, it will also provide fuel to the UC Irvine Fuel Cell Electric Bus (FCEB). This recent addition to the UCI Anteater Express bus fleet is the first of its kind on a University of California campus, and joins a group of 29 biodiesel buses that reached a ridership of over 2 million passengers in fiscal year 2014, and is expected to log nearly 4,000 miles per month on its assigned route.

Because the station functions as both a retail and research station, the NFCRC acquires a spectrum of data to study a variety of factors including fueling system efficiencies, hydrogen demand, fill times, supply and storage logistics, operator experiences, and fill patterns.
